Actor Mariyam Nafees reveals she’s still in touch with ex-boyfriend after marriage with husband’s approval

To reach this conclusion, the iVerify Pakistan team referred to the podcast interview of actor Mariyam Nafees with media outlet FHM Pakistan.

Various media outlets and platforms on September 2, 2024, published articles on actor Mariyam Nafees’s recent interview and quoted her as saying that she still kept contact with her ex-boyfriend with her husband’s permission. This was not what she had actually said in the interview.

Mariyam Nafees is a Pakistani television actress who married Aman Khan in 2021.

HOW IT STARTED

On September 2, a page on Facebook Dekho, which has 301,000 followers and describes itself as a media/news company, published a post quoting Nafees’s take on relationship boundaries from her podcast interview with Adnan Faisal, CEO of FHM Pakistan.

The outlet quoted her as saying, “I still talk to my ex-boyfriend with my husband’s permission.”

The post gained 5,900 likes and 218 reshares.

Media outlet BOL News also reported on the interview in a September 2 article titled, “Maryam Nafees reveals she’s still in touch with ex-boyfriend after marriage”.

The news story quoted her as saying, “I am still in touch with my ex-boyfriend, even though we are no longer related, but I am very close to my ex-boyfriend’s family. His sister is still my best friend, and my husband knows this too; he has no objection to it either.”

Digital news outlet The Current also quoted her as saying the same in its September 2 news article, titled, “My ex-boyfriend and I greet each other even after marriage”,

METHODOLOGY

A fact check was initiated to verify the claim due to the fact that multiple news outlets, with significant following were reporting on the interview which resulted in social media users bashing Nafees for disrespecting her marriage and promoting “immoral” relationships.

Listening to the complete August 28 interview with Adnan Faisal on FHM Pakistan’s YouTube channel showed that the two were talking about “red flags” in a marriage at the 9:15-minute mark.

The following is the transcript of the relevant portion of the interview from the 9:47-minute mark:

Nafees: “There are certain limitations to every relationship and you should know them.”

Faisal: “So for example you can meet and have talks with your ex-boyfriend.”

Nafees: “Let me give you one example. My ex and I, we are not on talking terms but I am very close to his family. His sister is my best friend.”

Faisal: “There is nothing bad in this.”

Nafees: “My husband knows that and he is very happy about it. He’s like: ‘You want to go? go. You want to call them over? call them over.’ Doesn’t matter.”

Faisal: “The ex too?”

Nafees: “We’re very cordial.”

Faisal: “You are friends?”

Nafees: “No we are not friends but we are cordial. It’s not as if we start slapping each other upon seeing the other.”

At no other point in the interview did the discussion come back to her and her ex-boyfriend.

FACT-CHECK STATUS: FALSE

The claim regarding Pakistani actress Mariyam Nafees saying that she is still in contact with her ex-boyfriend with her husband’s permission is false.

At no point did she say she was in touch with her former boyfriend, she only said their relationship was “cordial” and rather, she had a good relationship with and was still in touch with his family and sister who her husband allowed to freely visit and invite over.
